Two beautiful self-catering cottages in a brilliant position in Canterbury city centre.

Backing onto the lovely 7 Longport B&B, these next-door-to-each-other early-Victorian terraced cottages are an ideal base for seeing Canterbury if you're looking for a self-catering base in the city centre. Beautifully restored, and decorated in a fresh modern style, with soft, neutral  colours and furnished with an effective combination of contemporary and comfy, they are owned by the same people as the one-bedroom cottage B&B behind, so if you're a biggish group you could rent the whole lot and have your own very desirable Canterbury bolthole for a few days. The network of courtyard gardens behind the cottages has an almost Mediterranean feel on a summer's day, and with a spread like this you can make believe you're one of the locals for a few days.

Each cottage has three bedrooms – a double and a single on the first floor and a further double at the top of the house that between them can comfortably sleep up to five people. The kitchens are well-equipped with hob, oven, fridge-freezer, microwave and dishwasher, and are provided with a supply of basics like tea, coffee, oil, salt, etc, and both have washing machines. They have decent wifi, and each property has a cosy living room with a Freeview TV, digital radio, bluetooth speaker and DVD player, plus its own pretty courtyard garden – and the nice thing is you can either self-cater or use it as B&B accommodation, with breakfast provided each morning.

The city is on your doorstep, and the north Kent Coast – in particular the seafood restaurants of Whitstable – are just a short drive away; indeed a nice thing to do is to walk the Crab & Winkle Way which follows the old railway line from Canterbury to Whitstable (just over 7 miles in all). The friendly owner Ursula is on hand to advise on all things Kent and Canterbury, and the vibe is cool, relaxed and comfortable – indeed it's hard to think of a better place to stay in the city centre at this price.

Open all year.

Each cottage costs from £600 a week during low season to £850 a week in high season. Short breaks £420–£580. Optional breakfast £13pp.
