This centrally situated boutique Canterbury B&B is a perfect – and very private – base for the city.

Regularly voted one of Britain's best B&Bs, 7 Longport is about as homely a Canterbury haven as you could find. It not only enjoys a great position, very handy for the centre of Canterbury but tucked away in a peaceful location opposite the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, it's also extremely comfortable, and offers a great deal more privacy than most B&Bs, with unique accommodation in a separate one-bedroom cottage in an enclosed garden. On sunny days you can saunter out of your cottage and have breakfast in the lovely courtyard behind the main house; and if you need more room, the garden gives onto two three-bedroom terraced cottages that are ideal for self-catering.

The B&B cottage dates from the 15th century and was formerly a 'backhouse', where much of the work of the household was carried on. This is one of the few that survive and and is as comfortable as it is private and peaceful – decorated and furnished in a tasteful, contemporary style using a basic, white, cream and black colour palette and well-chosen, stylish furniture. There's a cosy wood-burning stove downstairs, tea and coffee including a Nespresso machine, a comfy bedroom with a king-size brass bed upstairs, and a wet room with posh toiletries and all the tech you need – wifi, DVD player, flatscreen TV, digital radio and bluetooth speaker. Breakfast is worth staying for in itself, all locally sourced  and served in the main house, the garden or in the cottage itself.

Above all the owner Ursula is friendly and knowledgeable hostess, providing a warm welcome and a good introduction to Canterbury too. There's loads to see on your doorstep, both in the city itself and beyond – the seafood restaurants of Whitstable and the Kent coast are just a short drive away (or you can walk there on the 7-mile-long Crab & Winkle Way). Mostly, though, this is just the sort of B&B that's nice to come back to at the end of the day. And if you fancy self-catering instead, the two properties on Love Lane, just the other side of the garden wall, are similarly cosy and well-equipped.

Open all year.

£100 a night for bed and breakfast for two people, £75 for one person.
