Crab & Winkle Way

Canterbury and Whitstable

The Crab and Winkle Way is a path for hikers and cyclists connecting Canterbury and Whitstable, mostly following the abandoned line of the world’s first steam-powered railway. Primarily a cycle route – though you can also walk it – it covers a little over seven miles, mostly traffic-free, through woods and countryside. From Whitstable to Canterbury there’s a fair bit of climbing; the ride back is far quicker and easier. In spring and summer the landscape is splashed with colours and its a nice alternative to a day at the beach. A good choice for escaping any crowds. To avoid a busy main road as you leave Canterbury, take the alternate route via the university.
