Portobello Hotel

UK England South East England Greater London Notting Hill

This boutique bolthole ticks just about every box if you're looking for a stylish yet affordable London place to stay.
Part of the small and perfectly formed Curious group of hotels, it's no accident that the Portobello is one of the capital's most alluring boutique hotels – indeed it virtually invented the term when it opened in 1971. A luxurious boutique bolthole for free spirits, it was perfectly in keeping with Notting Hill's at-the-time slightly edgy vibe. Since then of course Notting Hill has moved on to become one of London's most sought-after neighbourhoods, and there's no doubt that as a base for the capital it's about as convenient as it gets, while at the same time retaining some of the feel of a bohemian outpost. Certainly the Portobello Hotel ticks just about every box if you're looking for a stylish yet affordable London place to stay.

The hotel has 21 bedrooms, each individually designed with a slightly eccentric and quirky decor. Ranging from the smallest – 'Box', with single beds – through 'Jolly Good' to 'Roomy', 'Splendid' and the ultimate 'Signature' bedrooms, they all come with good wifi, mineral water, mini bars and en-suite bathrooms with Green & Spring toiletries and robes and slippers. Beds range from regular doubles – in Cosy, Comfy and Jolly Good rooms –  to king-size beds in Roomy rooms upwards. Splendid and Signature rooms come with a seating area and also feature some sort of canopy or four-poster bed – some even have a circular bed! Most rooms either overlook Stanley Gardens, one of the neighbourhood's quieter streets, or the hotel's own private garden.

Downstairs there's an comfy sitting room with an honesty bar that features craft gins and various other treats, and although the hotel has no bar or restaurant, you can order meals, snacks and drink from their well-priced room service menu –  plus they serve an excellent breakfast buffet in the drawing room every morning that is included in room rates (hot breakfasts cost extra).

Finally you couldn't be better placed for either seeing the sights of Notting Hill or indeed the rest of London. You're close to both Notting Hill Gate and Ladbroke Grove tube stations, and it's easy to walk to a lot of places from the hotel – the market on Portobello Road, Holland Park, Kensington Gardens and the museum district on the far side of Hyde Park. Just the place for a capital treat!
