The Stag on the River
UK England South East England Surrey Godalming
There's something special about a pub on the river. Whether it's a babbling brook or a majestic torrent, nothing enhances a pub quite as much, apart perhaps from a dozing dog or two, and The Stag on the River, is a perfect example, nestled beside the fast-running river Wey in the tiny Surrey village of Lower Eashing. Not only that: despite enjoying a peaceful rural location, it is literally just off the A3 on the outskirts of Godalming, so couldn't be easier to get to, or more of an alluring short break from London.
Part of the local 'Red Mist' group, The Stag has been here a while, since the 17th century in fact, and the interior is a maze of corridors, hidden corners, creaky floors and skewed ceilings. Its seven timber-framed bedrooms, each named after a nearby village, are furnished in a contemporary country style and very well-equipped, with tea-and coffee-making facilities, good wifi and flatscreen TVs, along with en-suite bathrooms with ESPA toiletries. Downstairs, the food is excellent across the board – from sandwiches and sharing platters to an excellent choice of main courses that hit the top end of the pub grub spectrum: local, seasonal and beautifully presented. You can eat in the airy and open main restaurant, or at a lovely outside arrangement of tables by the river, where of course you can just have a pint if that's all you want – they serve ales from the nearby Hog’s Back Brewery and also their own Tilbury microbrewery. Breakfast is included in overnight rates and is a generous continental buffet during the week, with hot options added at the weekend.
The service at The Stag is as top-notch as the food, and overall the pub makes an ideal base for touring the nearby Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you can not only walk and cycle to your heart's content but also visit the pleasant town of Godalming, nearby Guildford with its university and cathedral, or maybe even picturesque Haslemere and the Devil's Punchbowl, just a few miles down the A3. You could even use it as a stopover if you're taking your pet to see 'The Supervet' – Noel Fitzpatrick's practice is just around the corner!

Facilities
The Stag on the River pub and inn has recently undergone a £300k refurbishment enjoying a stunning finish inside and out, with no area untouched. The inn is home to 7 en-suite boutique bedrooms, which all have a modern, relaxing interior enjoying a colour palette of autumnal burnt oranges, reds and blues, set against the sharp white linens that sit upon the dreamy sleep-inducing Hypnos beds. Luxury touches remain perfectly balanced alongside the grade-listed history of the building (the uneven floors are particularly quaint) as you look around each room, from ESPA toiletries, luxury linens and towels, Nespresso coffee machines and smart TV's to the quality, black-out curtains to ensure a perfect night's sleep. Enjoy the comfort of top quality bedrooms, which sit on the first floor, with the benefit of having a great pub and restaurant downstairs that serves quality, seasonal food that has been lovingly prepared. The menus are well-equipped to cater for gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan tastes and the chefs have well-established relationships with local, independent producers including Secretts Farm, Cold-Pressed Oil Company, Chalk Stream trout and Mouka ice cream. The company even has its very own Red Mist ale brewed only for Red Mist pubs, from its micro-brewery (not on-site) alongside other seasonal, local Tilford Brewery ales. The bar features a range of local drinks, including local Sandhills Gin, Silent Pool, Nibbs, Mews, Twisted Nose and much more. Enjoy a relaxed and friendly atmosphere within a quality establishment, where our people and small touches make all the difference.Suitable For
